The Rose and The Dagger by Renée Ahdieh

After the ending of the first book that ROYALLY SCREWED ME UP, I’d say this book was a very pleasant pick-me-up. It was perfectly curated to cure my hangover, obviously 😌😂 And give me another one 🤦‍♀️ But the second book hangover was much more welcome because I got closure, which means that my heart isn’t BLEEDING anymore, just aching. A lot. But that’s a different story.

Much like the first book in this duology, there was an impossible level of tension in this book that constantly kept the reader gripped into the story. One of the things I loved the most about this second book is that it tied in so perfectly with the first one. It picked up right where The Wrath and The Dawn had left off and answered the burning questions that had been left unanswered.

Not only that, but it showed us the depth to the magic that had been hinted at in the first book! That had been one of the things I’d really been looking forward to see how Renée Ahdieh developed and I’m pleased to say she delivered! She so seamlessly wove the fantastical aspects into the story that it was like they’d been there all along, despite how we didn’t see much of them in the first book. This second book also really gave me Aladdin vibes (readers will understand 😉) and I truly could not have been happier with that!

I really loved seeing the relationship between Khalid and Shazi develop to something even more profound in this book as well as exploring the love triangle with Tariq more directly. That had been a threat in the first book, but I felt like it was something we saw a lot more clearly in this second book because they were put in the position to respond to it. And I’m glad they were too because it did wonders for the plotline! Seriously. It led to so many swoony scenes and I could do with those any day.

And I strongly stand by what I said after reading the first book, even more so after reading this one: I. NEED. A. KHALID. IN. MY. LIFE. Where can I order one? Does Renée Ahdieh manage those? Because if so, I’m putting a request in for one right now and I don’t care how long I have to wait: I NEED ME MY OWN KHALID 😫🙌🏻 In the main time, I’m going to go sniff my Khalid candle and pretend he’s already here. (Its a real solution, if you have the same problem as me, you should definitely give it a go 😉)
